Three-bay roll-away nest for smallstands and farm yards

Three bays of rust-treated galvanised sheet, with a slight roll-away floor so eggs settle in the collection tray instead of sitting in scratched, soiled straw. The frame bolts flat against a coop wall, or stands free on a timber base if your layout works better that way.

  • The front lip is deep enough that hens cannot kick bedding into the collection tray.
  • The sloped lid lifts clear, so you collect without bending into the box or reaching past a broody hen.
  • Galvanised surfaces wipe down and hose off, which matters through Highveld dust and summer heat.
  • Suits a few dozen layers on a smallstand or farm werf, not a commercial laying house.

Nomsa has kept layers on a half-hectare smallstand outside Bronkhorstspruit since 2011, and she is the person who answers most of the nest and feeder questions that come through the shop. Her own flock runs about forty hens in two timber coops, with a bantam pen alongside, so she knows what a galvanised nest bank looks like after three Highveld summers and a few Free State dust storms.

She checks every batch of laying nests before it leaves the yard: the roll-away floor angle, the depth of the front lip, and whether the lid hinge still sits flat after the sheet has been folded. If a bay arrives with a sharp edge or a tray that does not slide clean, she will say so and hold the unit back rather than send it out.

Where she works

Smallstand and farm werf coops across Gauteng, the Free State and the Cape. Most of her site visits are about nest placement, ventilation and where the collection tray should face.

Nest banks, roll-away trays, bedding depth, washing routine and the fittings that hold a nest against a coop wall without working loose.
